Ekweremadu assures Ijebu State agitators

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has assured agitators of Ijebu State from the present Ogun State of the possibility of creating the new state should they meet all the constitutional requirements for that purpose.

The deputy senate president said the creation of new states in a civilian dispensation is more complex. He urged the agitators to ensure that they adhere to all the relevant provisions of the nation’s law regarding state creation.

Ekweremadu spoke in Abuja, when he received in audience a group under the auspices of the Ijebu State Movement, who visited him to re-submit its amended request for the creation of Ijebu State, assured that his committee would ensure that it granted the request of any group that meets the constitutional requirements.
According to the Deputy President; “Creation of states in a civilian dispensation is very difficult, but it is not impossible.
We will look at the paper you have brought and make sure that it complies with Section 8 regarding relevant signatories for such request. “Once we find out that it complies with what the law says, we will send it to the nation’s electoral body to conduct a referendum”.
Earlier in a mission statement, Coordinator of Ijebu State Movement, Otunba Timothy Olu Adebanjo, said the group came to re-submit its request for creation of Ijebu State.
His words: “We seize this opportunity, once again, to proclaim our demand for a state of our own – Ijebu State with Ijebu- Ode as capital. “We hereby formally re-submit the amended request for the creation of Ijebu State from the present Ogun State.
