Multiple registrations: Keyamo calls for Obiano’s prosecution

Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to prosecute the governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mr. Willie Obiano, on the grounds that he allegedly engaged in multiple voter registrations.
This call was contained in a petition dated November 12, which was sent to the Chairman of the electoral body by Keyamo, the All Progressives Congress, APC’s lawyer.
In the petition, a copy of which was made available to National Mirror yesterday, Keyamo noted that the commission had earlier failed to prosecute a single person out of thousands of people it caught for multiple registration in 2011, stressing that this shows nonchallant attitude to statutory responsibilities on the part of the commission.
Keyamo made reference to section 2 and 3 of the Electoral Act, 2010, which criminalise multiple registrations with stipulated penalty of N100,000 or a term of imprisonment.
He, therefore, called on INEC to commence the prosecution of Obiano within 24 hours failing which he threatened to obtain order of mandamus to compel the commission to carry out its statutory duty. The petition reads in part: “Find attached copies of documents evidencing the said double registration at Otuocha Ward 1.
“Also, it is now public knowledge that the said “Obiano, Maduabuchi Willie” had earlier registered at Ifako/Soluyi Ward 2, Polling Unit 060 – Junction of Ramot Oluwakemi Street, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. His Voter Identification Number (VIN) is 90F5B12B01296204172 while his serial number on the Voters’ Register is 416.
