INEC redeploys Rivers and Bayelsa state Resident Electoral Commissioners

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the routine redeployment of some its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), including two of its most controversial ones – Gesilia Khan (formerly in Rivers) and Baritor Kpagih (formerly in Bayelsa).
Khan conducted the Rivers elections last year which were widely described as fraudulent by election observers and journalists. Several elected officials lost their seats at the courts in the state, even though the Supreme Court, in a stunning ruling yesterday, upheld the election of Gov. Nyesom Wike. Kpagih on the other hand was the INEC REC who conducted the Bayelsa governorship poll which was concluded this month and was marked by a lot of violence. The APC candidate, Timipre Sylva, repeatedly called for Kpagih’s redeployment, describing him as biased.
The re-deployment which takes effect immediately with the handing over to be concluded by Thursday the 2nd of February, 2016, was contained in a statement by INEC secretary, Augusta Ogakwu.
