PDP Gov. Umahi of Ebonyi is better than some APC governors-SGF

The secretary to the government of the federation, SGF, Engineer Babachir Lawal visited Abakiliki, the Ebonyi capital on a one day working visit to the state, during which he inspected and commissioned some projects undertaken by the Gov. David Umahi administration. The SGF inspected two dual carriageway flyovers at the African Trans-Sahara Highway currently under construction and commissioned the Governors’ Lodge named after the first civilian governor of the state, Senator Sam Egwu, as well as the CBN road at the Centenary City, Abakaliki.
Lawal who is known for his frequent verbal gaffes said in Ebonyi that the PDP governor of the state, Umahi, is better than some governors in his own party, the APC.
“Well, I cannot in all honesty understand how these works have been achieved within this short time and indeed in the climate of dire economic shortages of government,” Lawal said. “I am impressed that you were able to do these works within the cost you mentioned. I can in all honesty tell you that the work is far beyond the cost. Now, this is a standard for other states and the Federal Government to emulate.” He noted that Umahi is one of the few persons who believe that meager resources could be used to achieve much if we remove greed, which breeds corruption.
He commended Ebonyi people for choosing Umahi, adding that the presidency was fully in support of the governor’s developmental strides as the present federal government was not interested in which party any governor belonged but whether or not such administration was doing a wonderful job for their people.
Lawal and Umahi have forged a close friendship ever since they came into government. Last year, at a thanksgiving which Lawal held in Abuja, he invited Gov. Umahi, and then made a statement which raised a few eyebrows. In fact, some indigenes of Ebonyi demanded that Lawal who is from Adamawa, should disclose how much he received from their governor otherwise they would be forced to sue him.
Here is what Lawal said that did not please them: “Another man who I just met recently; the man who read the second verse, David Umahi – what is your second name; whether Umuahia or something like that- really since the time we met, I don’t know why, our spirits locked on. And you see that he has been good; he is somebody I know that when am in trouble I can always run to him. This is a man; I don’t know but he is PDP; he’s Igbo but he sent a trailer load of rice to my governor for the IDPs in Adamawa state recently. May be he did not want me to say it.
“Again, one day I was just in my office looking and sounding broke, he just said ‘during the Sallah, I am going to send Ebonyi rice to you’. And I said I don’t want Ebonyi rice, I have too much rice in my house; I don’t even know what to do with the rice. So later his ADC comes and says oga sent me to you. And I said what is inside that thing and he said money and I said bring it my friend”Umahi and lawal
